Swimmers made a splash and raised some cash

Youngsters went to great lengths in memory of a fellow swimmer.

Sean’s Swim School, which meets at Claremont Senior School, Bodiam, Robertsbridge, held its annual sponsored swim on July 9th. This year’s raised money £1000 is for the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) charity in memory of 13-year-old James Haggerty from Bexhill.

James, a keen swimmer, passed away in March 2009 due to a rare genetic heart condition. The Bexhill High School pupil collapsed and died while playing hide and seek with a friend.

Sean CollinsThe sponsored swim started at 1pm and included prizes donated by Southern Water, which supports Sean’s Swim School through its Learn to Swim scheme. Sean Collins, who runs the swim school, said: “I was really impressed with the swimmers and their achievements. Lots of swimmers managed to swim an exceptional number of lengths."

“The money raised will be used to hire scanners which will be used to test children for signs of undetected heart conditions free of charge.”

Giles Perrin, head teacher of Claremont Senior School, said: “On behalf of all at Claremont Senior School, many congratulations to all those involved in this excellent event. To raise so much money is a wonderful achievement and a credit to all the swimmers and Sean’s Swim School.”
